<span style="font-size: 20px;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffff00; font-size: 20px;">卫塞节（Vesak），</span></strong>梵文的意思是“月圆”之意。卫塞节是南传佛教传统纪念佛教创始人释迦牟尼佛诞生、成道、涅槃的节日。东南亚和南亚国家如斯里兰卡、泰国、缅甸、新加坡、马来西亚、印度尼西亚、尼泊尔等国的佛教信众，均在这一年一度的重要节日中举行盛大的庆典活动。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;">“月圆”象征佛陀德智圆满、福慧具足，真理之光遍照世界，六道众生都能感受到佛陀真理的启示，破除烦恼与黑暗，证悟光明、清净的境界。每年卫塞节的日期根据历法而定，是在五月的月圆之日。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;">卫塞节，其实是把佛陀诞生、成道、涅槃，于同一日纪念。据南传佛教典籍记载，佛陀5月的一个月圆之日出生；35年后又在5月的月圆之日，于菩提树下悟道；后来他涅槃那天，巧的也是5月的月圆之日。三者虽非同一天，却全都在5月份，且有月圆之最大共同特点。于是，后世的佛教信众，便订下在每年5月的月圆日，庆祝卫塞节。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;">佛教最初并没有统一使用佛历的说法，<strong><span style="background-color: #ffff00; font-size: 20px;">只是在佛陀的出生、出家、成道、涅槃日等举行相关纪念活动。</span></strong>而且南传与北传以及藏传佛教举行纪念活动的日期并不统一，只是各依传承，因循旧制而行。佛历的确定和统一使用是缘于世界佛教徒联谊会（简称“世佛联”）成立以后的事。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;">1950年5月25日，在锡兰（今斯里兰卡）首都科伦坡举办了首届“世界佛教徒友谊会”，这次会议共有29个国家129位僧人和学者代表出席，而中国佛教界当时由于特殊的历史原因，没有派代表参加会议，因此没有机会发表意见和提出建议。大会议定：佛陀诞生于公元前623年，成道于公元前588年，涅槃于公元元前543年。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffff00; font-size: 20px;">会议还议定以六种光色蓝、黄、红、白</span></strong>、橙及前五色的混合色为佛教教旗。其构图纵横均为蓝、黄、红、白、橙等色，象征人类的各种肤色。其中，横的表示全世界人类的和睦相处，纵的表示世界的和平。教旗的六色(包括混合色)象征佛陀的庄严法相和佛教的博大精深。蓝色代表佛教慈悲和平的主旨；黄色寓示中道了义；红色象征成就福德；白色表示清净解脱；橙色象征佛法的根本智慧圆满；五色的混合色意真如不二之义。另外议定以法轮作为佛教教徽。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;">1954年，“世佛联”于缅甸首都仰光举行第三次代表大会，会议决定佛教国家以“佛历”作为纪元，并以释迦牟尼涅槃日起推算公元1954年为佛历2497年，这就是上座部佛历纪元的由来。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;"><strong><span style="background-color: #ffff00; font-size: 20px;">佛历计算的方法是：</span></strong>以佛降生于公元前623年减去佛寿80岁，即公元前543年为佛涅槃年代，再与当年的年份相加即为佛历年。如公元2019年，佛历计算即543＋2019＝2562年。另外，1972年起规定佛诞后佛历年份应补加1年，那么2019年佛历应为2563年。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;">1956年在印度隆重举行了佛陀入灭二千五百年的国际纪念法会，当时中国佛教协会派团参加了相关活动，中国佛教协会所办刊物《现代佛学》还发行了纪念专刊。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;">同年，希腊、挪威、土耳其、美国等国亦加入倡议行列。1999年12月，在联合国发表的通讯中，表示有关卫塞节的倡议草案在没有投票的情况下被采用。从此，“卫塞节”成为佛教国家和一些地区的公节假日，期间会隆重举行相关的佛教纪念活动。</span>

<span style="font-size: 20px;">2006年5月7—10日，泰国曼谷举办了联合国卫塞节的庆祝活动。在庆祝卫塞节之际，也是泰国国王普密蓬登基六十周年，因此成为了双重庆典。由40多国佛教代表参与的国际佛教会议、唱颂祈祷仪式和点烛活动，于佛统府大佛城及联合国会议中心召开。时任联合国秘书长安南为庆典送上了祝贺。</span>
